LSO Wins Student Chapter of the Year Award!!

Wonderful News!

We have received the New Member's Roundtable (NMRT) Student Chapter of the Year Award! This is truly an honor and recognizes all the hard work of LSO officers and members from the past year. A job well done to everyone in making our organization truly proactive, collaborative, and innovative. We will be honored at the NMRT Reception during ALA Annual in Washington, D.C. this summer. A travel grant of $1000 has been awarded to LSO and further details will be sent out to the listserv.

A quote from the award letter:

"We received many strong applications this year, and your chapter’s selection is a tribute to your past year of accomplishments and hard work. Congratulations! Comedy Club Social Event!

The Library Student Organization is hosting a social event at Laff’s Comedy Club in Tucson on Friday, April 13^th.

WHAT: LAFF’S COMEDY CLUB SHOW

WHEN: Friday, April 13^th. We will meet near the entrance to Laff’s at 7:00PM. The show begins at 8:00PM and lasts until about 9:30PM.

WHO: All are invited! Please invite all your SIRLS and non-SIRLS friends and family to attend. Faculty are welcome to come, too! But you must RSVP by Tuesday, April 10^th, with the number of people so that we can make our reservation correctly.

LSO is suggesting a $3.00 donation per person, and as always more is welcome. This can just be paid in cash or check at the time of the event. Your support is always appreciated!

Reflections on our Black History Month Event

I just wanted to thank Jearold Hersey for putting together a great event last Wednesday: Gateway to African American Literature and Scholarship. To begin, Jearold facilitated a discussion among the group about our favorite black authors, actors, poets, and artists. Next was our guest of honor, Pima County Public Library's Elva Smithwhite, who recently received the Ms. Rosa Parks Living History Makers Award for Education. She engaged the audience with her storytelling and passion for librarianship. It was truly a night to remember! Thanks to Jearold for organizing the event, Elva for taking her time to meet with us, and to all that came and participated.

Today at my library - Monsters!

Well, not real monsters, but Monster Trucks. As some of you know I'm the automotive librarian for the Universal Technical Institute in Avondale, AZ and today we had a visit by Dennis Anderson and his 2006 World Champion monster truck "Grave Digger". Mr. Anderson is one of the nicest racers you could ever meet and was happy to answer my request to stop by and check out the library, and I even helped him find some rare specifications for a 1954 Willys that he is restoring. I plan to feature Dennis Anderson and his monster truck in my own version of "at your library" and wanted to share this with my fellow librarians to remind us that we should sieze every opportunity we are given to promote our libraries and look for ways we can connect with our users on a level they comfortable with. I guess if public libraries have leading authors for book talks, then it would be fitting for an automotive library to have monster trucks and race car drivers!

Back From Seattle

So, I am back from the ALA Midwinter in Seattle and like Beth stated in her entry, this “little” conference was indeed overwhelming, especially for a first time ALA conference attendee. If it wasn’t for the fact that Beth and some of the other LSO and SIRLS students were there to guide me, I would have probably spent my time staring at the tall buildings and trying to decipher the Midwinter schedule in an effort to select which events to attend and what exhibits to see.

Though they didn’t have a whole lot of exhibits geared specifically towards students, they offered a look into some of the different things that are being touted to libraries right now. Gaming is huge with young adult/teen users so something that must be mentioned (I know Beth loves ‘em) are DDR and Guitar Hero, two hot market items that some public libraries are adding to their teen media centers.

As for the sessions, what really stood out for me was the OCLC panel discussion on social software. They discussed the implications of social software for the profession and emphasized the need for librarians to embrace digital networking tools so that they can use these tools to better serve their users. David Lee King talked about the way digital tools can really help libraries that are outgrowing their physical space by giving them “digital space”. He has already put this in to practice by creating a digital library for the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. He’s very emphatic about librarians using social software to their advantage and basically said that rather than libraries waiting for users to show up, librarians can market their libraries to their communities via social software. I can see his point too: if teenagers are spending most of their time on myspace, flickr, and second life, what better way for a library to reach them than on their own turf! Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe mentioned the way that, at least within her library, on-line encounters with users last longer than what she calls the “one off encounter”, those that occur face to face at the reference desk. She said many online patrons will carry on lengthy dialogues with a librarian via computer; whereas most patrons physically present at the library will usually just ask a specific question of the person at the reference desk, and that would be the extent of the interaction. She uses myspace and second life to market her library to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana. Check out their myspace here. It was interesting to me to listen to these librarians talk in such an enthusiastic and positive way about technologies that make it easier for users to avoid the physical library. I think it just goes to show that the profession really is evolving to a more tech driven one. Social software tools are definitely some of the cooler ways for librarians to interact with, and provide information to, their users

Going along with the discussion of technology, Jenny Levine emphasized the importance of gaming to reach teen users, and how she and other librarians are implementing such tools into the library’s collections. Speaking of which, while wondering through the exhibits we suddenly lost our webmaster, Beth Hoffman, to a DDR dance off against non other than Jenny Levine herself; followed by some wicked shredding on Guitar Hero. You are MY guitar HERO, BETH!

Seattle Impressions

Greetings from Seattle and ALA Midwinter Conference!

There are several of us from LSO here, and I hope some of the other folks will blog their impressions too (hint, hint).

This is my second library conference and my first ALA conference - and boy is it a change from Internet Librarian. The conference is HUGE (and this is the "little" ALA conference). Huge to the point of being overwhelming. I've had fun, but it's harder to find my way around and to figure out what sessions I can get to and so forth. That, coupled with the fact that all of the sessions I want to go to seem to be scheduled at the same time, means that I've spent rather more time wandering around Seattle and enjoying the sights than I've spent in sessions.

I've been to a couple of really good sessions though. The OCLC Symposium on the social implications of social networking software was excellent, and although I'm not going to go into detail about the session, I will say this: If you're at all interested in this sort of thing, you need to be reading danah boyd's blog, apophenia.

The presentation on Social Software: Best Practices for Libraries was also good, and although it wasn't aimed directly at groups like LSO, it did give me a couple of good ideas....

But even though I haven't been to a lot of sessions, I still think it's been worth it to come here, for an entirely other reason: Networking. I got to see friends I'd made at Internet Librarian, and I've gotten to meet a bunch of new folks too. I've gotten a couple of tips on jobs to apply for now that I'm nearing graduation, which is cool.

Oh, and I also got to play Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero at the ALA TechSource booth, and I'm making it a personal mission to get some of the other LSO folks to join the fun before we all come home. (Who says conferences have to be all about boring meetings?)

5 Things You Might Not Know About LSO

The "5 Things" meme has been running through the biblioblogosphere for the past couple of weeks and since a few of the bloggers I read have tagged anybody who hasn't responded but wants to, I thought I'd take the opportunity to put a twist on the meme and post 5 things you may not know about LSO and what we're planning for the upcoming semester. So, without further ado...

1) Our wiki has a place for folks to buy and sell used textbooks for SIRLS classes. That's a useful resource, that is.

2) We're planning a meetup at ALA Midwinter for LSO and SIRLS folks, so if you're headed to Seattle and want to join in the fun, send Aaron an e-mail and we'll keep you in the loop.

3) Our meeting calendar has been updated for the Spring 2007 semester. (But we're planning a lot of fun stuff in addition to the meetings, so keep checking back.)

4) If you can't make it to our meetings in person, you can attend virtually using Skype. If you're interested, send Beth or Etta an e-mail and we'll help set you up.

5) We have a YouTube account and we'll be uploading videos of last semester's Jobs Series soon, so if you missed any of these talks, you'll get a second chance to see them.

This semester SIRLS, LSO, SLA and Friends of SIRLS in Phoenix are sponsoring a Job and Career Series. Our goal is to provide SIRLS students with information relating to the current library and information fields as well as a chance to interact with professionals in the different fields.

On Monday, 9 October, a panel of speakers will discuss their different fields and their unique environments, how they got there, and what they see for the future. The Tucson speakers include: Mary Graham, she is the Head Librarian at the Arizona State Museum, Jan Knight, she is an information consultant who established Bancroft Information Services, and Ann Dutton Ewbank, who has served as a K-12 librarian and is now in the ASU West library.

The evening panel will be in the SIRLS multipurpose room, with pizza available at 5:30pm. The speakers will talk at 6:00pm for approximately half an hour and will end with a Q&A session. The evening should conclude at 7:00pm.

Please RSVP, even if you are not sure whether you might attend, so that we can get a good count. See you there!

Resume Consultation Sessions

LSO and UA’s Library Science Librarian, Mary Feeney, are sponsoring an afternoon of individual resume consultations for all current SIRLS students. Consultations will be conducted on Friday October 13, 2006 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m (light refreshments provided) in room A314 of the UA Main Library. These half hour sessions will allow each student have a professional look at their resumes and provide a critique and suggestions on the resume. Our volunteers work in a variety of library and information fields so we will do our best to match your interest with someone currently in that field. For distance students or those unable to meet in person, we are now offering virtual consultations during that week.

We suggest having a particular job in mind so that the resume can be tailored and there are known areas to address. If you have more than one job in mind, feel free to sign up for multiple sessions if the jobs fall in different library/information fields.

Consultation times will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis so be sure to register early! Registration ends October 3, 2006. We will notify you by email no later than October 6 of the time of your appointment. We request that individuals who sign up for a session and then find out they cannot attend to please contact us so that we can allow another student to consult with the volunteers.

For virtual consultations, fill out the form with all the requested information, and make sure to mark the "Virtual Consultation" check box. Once you have submitted your request, email your resume to Mary Feeney by October 8th. She will forward your resume on to the appropriate consultant, who will then get back to you with comments and suggestions by October 16th.

This Monday, 11 September, Jeremy Reeder will talk about career path planning. He currently works in the Maricopa County library system. He spoke in Phoenix this week and those who attended said he is an excellent speaker who shared some great information.

Here is the schedule of events for Tucson: We will have pizza in the SIRLS multipurpose room starting at 5:30pm. The speaker will talk at 6:00pm for approximately half an hour and will end with a Q&A session. The evening should conclude at 7:00pm.

We will attempt to capture and record the evenings to post online, either the SIRLS or LSO websites, for those distance students who cannot attend either evening. However, the current format is as yet unknown – so if you have experience in this area and would like to help, please contact me!

"I am a SIRLS student, LSO member and the Youth Services Librarian at the Oro Valley Library.

We offer Homework Help in the Teen Zone Monday through Thursday, 3:30pm to 5pm. Currently, we have lost all of our volunteers for Mondays and Wednesdays. The expertise that is needed is a) love to work with elementary or middle school students; b) have knowledge in subjects such as Language Arts, Math, Reading and/or Social Studies; and c) availability to commit to most Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5pm during the Amphitheater School District year.

We begin the new year on Monday, August 21st.

New Meeting Location for Fall

Upon discussion at the meeting last Friday, we've decided to hold our LSO Meetings somewhere new this fall - Bookend Cafe! (see here: http://www.union.arizona.edu/dining/ufs/bookend/index.php).

This decision was made based on the following:
- The Udall Center is no longer consistenly available
- SIRLS generally closes its doors at 5:00
- We want to allow students to attend virtually; while we have officers willing to bring laptops, we can also checkout laptops from the Main Library if needed
- The cafe serves food and coffee!
- We can go in the library if needed (it's cold/hot outside, we want to use a whiteboard or print something, etc.)

So for the next meeting, held September 1st, we will meet at 6:00PM at Bookend Cafe. See you there!

Dewey Donation System

I ran across this site: the Dewey Donation System. Check out the website for more details, but basically they are helping out libraries in need. Currently they are focusing on the Harrison County (Mississippi) Public Library, which got hammered by Katrina and is still recovering.

If LSO has any budget for donations, this is something to think about.

IRLS 608 Planning & Evaluation of Library & Information Centers

For this class Professor Higgins would like us to read a recent management textbook and a recent marketing textbook before the class begins. She suggests they will be easily found at a used bookstore. So far I have been unable to do so. Any recommendations on good ones to read? I might be trying to order them new if I don't find them soon and would like some suggestions.

When I discovered LibraryThing last fall it was the beginning of a torrid love affair. The interface! The virtual library shelf! The community of readers! But most of all I fell in love with tagging. How empowering it feels to be able to develop my own access points to my book collection! [LibraryThing lets you catalog your own book collection, rate them, review them, tag them, and share all of that on the web.]

Pretty quickly I started wondering if this was something that could be applied to library catalogs -- for example, what if library members could create their own tags for their reading history. Yeah. Well I'm definitely not alone.

Abby at LibraryThing posted what promises to be the first of many blog entries where she compares tags generated by LibraryThing members with subject headings in the Library of Congress format. Take a look.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for buying LSO candy this semester and helping to support your Library Student Organization. This semester we have raised over $1300. More than $800 was directly from candy sales. This money will be used to help pay for conference scholarships, LSO social functions like the end of semester BBQ and the Graduate Student Symposium coming up in the fall. Thank you for helping to make these opportunities possible through your generous support.

Distance Students!

Do you have a summer class in Tucson which will meet anytime from May 22-July 31? Will you be down for the week or just a weekend? Do you need temporary housing? Are you willing to stay in a dorm (Coronado Hall)? Well, Conference Housing can help you. They have a limited amount of rooms available this summer.
